Kold College - Green education starts in the kitchen
Kold College has installed the BTN food waste grinder as an integral part of the school’s mission: to educate the chefs, bakers and nutrition assistants of the future in responsible and resource-conscious behavior. With the grinder, waste is not only handled efficiently, but also becomes part of the students’ learning.
With the new solution, food waste is converted into biogas and fertilizer – and it can be measured and explained. This makes it possible to show students exactly how much energy and nutrition is created from the waste they sort correctly. The system makes the consequences of their choices visible and turns theory into practice.
Previously, food waste was collected daily and transported over 70 kilometers to a feed plant. Today, it is collected once a month and taken to a nearby biogas plant just seven kilometers from the school. This saves over 3,600 transport kilometers annually – and significantly reduces the school’s carbon footprint.
Big operational savings and fewer pests
In addition to the environmental benefits, the solution also makes financial sense. From previously spending DKK 120,000 annually on food waste and grease collection, the expected annual cost is now around DKK 20,000. At the same time, the closed system helps minimize problems with pests that were previously attracted to outdoor waste rooms.
