Region Zealand - From food waste to resource in a closed loop

In Region Zealand, sustainability is a strategic priority. A key focus area is the correct use of resources, where reducing food waste plays an important role. The region has a complete, data-driven food waste logistics system that creates transparency down to the component and department level. This makes it possible to identify exactly where waste is occurring – and work purposefully to reduce it.

Say goodbye to heavy drums and daily pickups

Better working environment and optimized logistics

Previously, food waste was handled in 200-liter drums that were placed outdoors and required physically demanding lifting in all kinds of weather. The system was inefficient – both in terms of the working environment and financially. The desire was clear: to transform food waste from a problem to a resource. With BTN, we have succeeded. The drums are a thing of the past and food waste is now handled in a closed, hygienic system that minimizes strain and waste.
The region systematically records occupational health and safety data, and today, heavy lifting in connection with food waste is no longer related to operations. This is a significant improvement in both safety and well-being for employees.
At the same time, collection logistics have been optimized. Previously, trucks came daily to pick up waste. Now it only happens every 8-10 days – reducing both traffic and CO₂ emissions around the hospital.

BTN as part of a larger cycle

BTN is a central part of Region Zealand’s overall biowaste management plan – a fully closed system that is monitored and operated by the kitchen staff themselves. They are the ones with their hands in it every day, and their insights ensure that the solution works in practice. With the data-driven setup, it is possible to analyze and reduce food waste all the way down to the department level and down to the individual component of the food.

This creates transparency and makes it possible to act purposefully and efficiently. BTN supports not only day-to-day operations, but also the region’s strategic goal of turning food waste into a resource and creating a stronger interplay between sustainability, working environment and financial responsibility.
